The Fremont Achiever Chess Team has a very special chess program taught by the nationally renowned chess instructors from the Torres Chess and Music Academy.  This course will provide experienced tournament players with instruction that will quickly increase their ability and understanding of chess. In addition, we will also teach newer students the skills necessary to excel in competitive chess. Participants will begin their afternoon by participating in an exciting chess class taught by the top chess instructors from the area. Students will then play 1 USCF rated chess game as part of the ongoing tournament and receive 1-on-1 analysis of their play. Lower rated players will play at g/30 time controls while higher rated players will be using g/45. Every five weeks, the tournament will be reported to the USCF in order to be rated. All participants must be members of the USCF. If your child is not a member, your child can join or renew their USCF membership at the first meeting.

The tuition for this program is $180 for ten weeks.

Drop-In for a single class for $20.

If you miss the first week or inform us during registration that you will be missing a week we will prorate the tuition. No refund will be given for unscheduled student absences.

Fremont Summer Chess Camp: Week 4

July 28, 2014

Below are photographs of my favorite moments from week four of the Fremont Summer Chess Camp. I wish to thank all of our students, coaches, Steve and Kate’s Camps,  the Wild Cat Education and Conservation Fund and Grandmaster Susan Polgar. It takes a lot of great people to make the Fremont Summer Chess Camp as successful as it is and without these great groups and individuals many kids from Northern California would have missed out on an experience of a lifetime.

Chess Master Eric Schiller Inspires Children at Fremont Summer Chess Camp

July 19, 2014

The Torres Chess and Music Academy describes their latest event in the esteemed guest series for the Fremont Summer Chess Camp.

For Immediate Release:

Fremont, California 7/19/14

This past Thursday, chess master Eric Schiller came to guest lecture the students at the Fremont Summer Chess Camp. Having written two hundred top selling chess books, it’s a rarity for Eric to have time to perform in person. However, on July 17th, Eric Schiller managed to steal the spotlight at the sixth annual Fremont Summer Chess Camp.

Relaxed and highly personable, Schiller bantered amiably with the audience while presenting seven of his most exciting chess victories over famous adversaries. Perhaps the liveliest moments came during Eric’s analysis of his victory over International Master Emory Tate, who was also in the room. Every child in the room had their eyes glued to the massive movie screen where the ideas of Schiller and Tate came to life in vivid detail while the stars of the game explained their moves in depth. Eric Schiller’s presentation was highly polished and even in between games he managed to maintain the focus of close to fifty excited young chess players. At the conclusion of his lecture, Eric graciously awarded trophies to the winners of the weekly rated chess tournament as well as signed chess books for the scores of his young fans.

Nearly 50 opponents, many of whom are some of the top ranked young chess players in the United States, took on the famed International Chess Master simultaneously. Emory Tate, who only had the white pieces in a few of the games, played for 5 hours and a walked nearly 2 miles while completing his simultaneous chess exhibition! During the course of this momentous task, Emory Tate emerged victorious on every single board.

“In sixteen years of running events like these, I have never witnessed this level of chess mastery in one of our simuls. Beyond making it look easy, Emory managed to make every child feel important.” -Chris Torres

Mr. Torres is the founder of the Torres Chess and Music Academy which is very popular with the top scholastic chess players in Northern California. Every child who took part in the main event received one-on-one instruction following their game, an autograph from Emory Tate, a souvenir photograph of Emory at their board and the opportunity to learn from one of the strongest chess masters in the United States.

Bughouse Chess and Music

July 6, 2014
Mr. Diaz is "Houston’s only chess and trumpet professional."

Nephtali Diaz is “Houston’s only chess and trumpet professional.”

Besides myself, there are several other accomplished musicians who have a real gift for teaching chess. Many of these multi-talented individuals already work for the Torres Chess and Music Academy. One who does not yet work with us but I am definitely keeping an eye on is Nephtali Diaz.

Mr Diaz is “Houston’s only chess and trumpet professional,” which makes City of Houston very lucky to have such a talented individual in residence. Neph is a regular at Houston area chess tournaments and has paying trumpet gigs several times a month. Besides being accomplished in both chess and music, Nephtali has carved a niche in teaching a chess variant known as bughouse.

The starting position in a bughouse chess match.

The starting position in a Bughouse Chess match.

For the uninitiated, Bughouse is an extremely popular team chess game played with two boards and four people. Team mates sit adjacent to each other with one one partner using the white pieces while the other partner plays as black. When your partner captures a chess piece, he/she places it in front of your board and you can decide whether or not you want to place it on your own board as a turn or save it for later. If you chose not to “drop” the gifted piece you then must play a standard chess move. The action on both boards stops as soon as one player is checkmated.

If this sounds like fun you are correct. Bughouse is a blast to play. For more information on bughouse chess I suggest checking out www.BughouseMaster.com or attending one of Nephtali Diaz’s many lectures on the subject. Details on his next lecture are below:

Planning to play in the 2014 U.S. Junior Open or Not-A-Junior Open happening very soon in Houston July 11-13? Take a break from regular chess and drastically improve your Bughouse game by attending my power packed Bughouse seminar on Sat. evening and learn the SECRETS to becoming good at Bughouse while also improving your chess tactics! As a multi-national champion on the game including lectures at many chess events (including the 2014 American Open) and national lecturer featured in Chess Life magazine, it’s also an excellent way to prepare for the Bughouse tournament on Sat night. Visit my website for more info:www.BughouseMaster.com — Sign up for my lecture takes place on site and the lecture is from 530-630P Saturday, right before the side events — see you there!! Fremont Summer Chess Camp: Week 1

July 5, 2014

The first week of the Torres Chess and Music Academy’s Fremont Summer Camp was a smashing success. One parent even asked me why our camp was so much better than the other chess classes in the Bay Area. I answered, “The real secret is in enthusiasm. It is the magic we use to transform challenges into accomplishments.”
