Chess Master Eric Schiller Inspires Children at Fremont Summer Chess Camp

July 19, 2014

The Torres Chess and Music Academy describes their latest event in the esteemed guest series for the Fremont Summer Chess Camp.

For Immediate Release:

Fremont, California 7/19/14

This past Thursday, chess master Eric Schiller came to guest lecture the students at the Fremont Summer Chess Camp. Having written two hundred top selling chess books, it’s a rarity for Eric to have time to perform in person. However, on July 17th, Eric Schiller managed to steal the spotlight at the sixth annual Fremont Summer Chess Camp.

Relaxed and highly personable, Schiller bantered amiably with the audience while presenting seven of his most exciting chess victories over famous adversaries. Perhaps the liveliest moments came during Eric’s analysis of his victory over International Master Emory Tate, who was also in the room. Every child in the room had their eyes glued to the massive movie screen where the ideas of Schiller and Tate came to life in vivid detail while the stars of the game explained their moves in depth. Eric Schiller’s presentation was highly polished and even in between games he managed to maintain the focus of close to fifty excited young chess players. At the conclusion of his lecture, Eric graciously awarded trophies to the winners of the weekly rated chess tournament as well as signed chess books for the scores of his young fans.

Nearly 50 opponents, many of whom are some of the top ranked young chess players in the United States, took on the famed International Chess Master simultaneously. Emory Tate, who only had the white pieces in a few of the games, played for 5 hours and a walked nearly 2 miles while completing his simultaneous chess exhibition! During the course of this momentous task, Emory Tate emerged victorious on every single board.

“In sixteen years of running events like these, I have never witnessed this level of chess mastery in one of our simuls. Beyond making it look easy, Emory managed to make every child feel important.” -Chris Torres

Mr. Torres is the founder of the Torres Chess and Music Academy which is very popular with the top scholastic chess players in Northern California. Every child who took part in the main event received one-on-one instruction following their game, an autograph from Emory Tate, a souvenir photograph of Emory at their board and the opportunity to learn from one of the strongest chess masters in the United States.

The Fremont Summer Chess Camp has two more weeks of classes and special events including a lecture from famed chess author Eric Schiller and a visit from Grandmaster Susan Polgar. For more information please visithttp://www.ChessAndMusic.com.

Fremont Summer Chess Camp: Week 1

July 5, 2014

The first week of the Torres Chess and Music Academy’s Fremont Summer Camp was a smashing success. One parent even asked me why our camp was so much better than the other chess classes in the Bay Area. I answered, “The real secret is in enthusiasm. It is the magic we use to transform challenges into accomplishments.”

For more than a decade, the Torres Chess and Music Academy has been transforming the California chess scene one child at a time.

For more than a decade, the Torres Chess and Music Academy has been transforming the California chess scene one child at a time. It is the mission of the TCAMA to produce chess excellence in the schools and communities in which that it operates. In fact, since the Torres Chess and Music Academy’s summer chess camp has become an annual event, three different California schools have won National Elementary Championships and all of them are located at or walking distance from its summer chess camp locations. Compare this to the time period before the TCAMA full day chess camps in which California had never produced an elementary chess program that won the USCF National Championship and the evidence is clear: The Torres Chess and Music Academy’s summer program is much more than just another chess camp; it is an opportunity to change your child’s life.

“If we are known by the company we keep, then the influencers you expose your child to ought to inspire and invigorate them to greatness. Chess mastery is not just learned by reviewing games and solving problems. It is grasped by the mind and spirit of those children who experienced it in the lives of highly accomplished chess masters. All of our teachers understand the importance of continually introducing your children to those who have chosen to excel through chess. Our students listen to them, watch them and learn firsthand what it takes to be a champion in both chess and life.”- Chris Torres

Without a doubt, no-one exemplifies using chess as a key to success in life better than the former world chess champion, GM Susan Polgar. A small sampling of her vast spectrum of achievements includes:

  • Four Women’s World Chess Championships
  • Five time Olympic champion with over 10 medals earned
  • The number one ranked woman in the world at the age of fifteen
  • The first chess player ever to be a World Champion at Blitz, Rapid and Classical time controls.
  • The first woman to be awarded a men’s Grandmaster title in chess

Perhaps a child lacks the confidence necessary to achieve his/her personal chess goals. The TCAMA is proud to introduce International Master Emory Tate to our summer chess camp in order to help grow a child’s chess confidence and make his or her play more assertive. Emory is regarded as one of the greatest aggressive chess players in America. He made a name for himself in chess in the United States Air force and by winning the All-Armed Services tournament five different times. Since 1992 he has become Indiana State champion a total of six different times and then Alabama State Chess Champion twice. When he isn’t coaching Bay Area students, Emory makes it a regular habit to defeat top grandmasters at the prestigious chess tournaments in which he often participates.

First Annual Lathrop Mayor’s Cup Chess Tournament

Lots of happy faces at the inaugural Lathrop Mayor's Cup Chess Tournament.

Lots of happy faces at the inaugural Lathrop Mayor’s Cup Chess Tournament.

On Saturday May 24th 2014, the chess club at River Islands Technology Academy hosted the inaugural Lathrop Mayor’s Cup Chess Tournament. Thirty children were in attendance for a five round USCF rated chess tournament which was the first of its kind ever held in Lathrop, California.  The eight hour chess extravaganza also served as a fund raising event for River Islands Technology Academy with all profits from the food sales going directly to the school.

Lathrop’s mayor, Sonny Dhaliwal, came and met with all the participating students. Mayor Dhaliwal was extremely proud to observe so many of Lathrop’s children playing chess.

“I had the honor to attend the first Mayor’s Cup chess tournament last Saturday at River Islands Technology Academy. I was so happy to see youngsters having such a great time with their families. I am so thankful to Chris Torres for his hard work and dedication. My best wishes are always with Chris and his family. Congratulations to all who took part in the Mayor’s Cup on a job well done.” – Mayor Sonny Dhaliwal

After Mayor Dhaliwal had taken a moment to speak with everyone in attendance, Brenda Scholl, principal of River Islands Technology Academy, gave him a tour of their brand new campus and told him about RitechA’s first school year. At the end of the day Mrs. Scholl returned to present the awards to the participants of all five sections.

In the K-1 section Maddox Ramos won the first place trophy winning four of his five games. Rosaleia Torres took second with three wins and a draw. Hayden Hokanson placed third. Mia Viloria tied for fourth place with Rio Torres-O’Callaghan. The River Islands Technology Academy Chess Team took first place in the k-1 section.

The top players in the 2-3 grade section were Rex Watson in first and Jackson Torres-O’Callaghan in second.

The largest section was for grades 4-5. First place went to Omar Silva with a perfect score.  Jacob Santos was close behind with only one loss. Travis Torres-O’Callaghan, Chloe Ma, and Armando Silva all scored 3/5 and thus had a three way tie for third place. Again, River Islands Technology Academy placed first as a team.

In the final section,  grades 6-8, Berkeley Torres-O’Callaghan won first place. Berkely’s sister, Savannah Torres-O’Callaghan tied for second place with Caleb Dunn.  Mossdale Elementary School, powered exclusively by the Torres-Ocallaghan family, placed first in this section.

After such a successful start, the Torres Chess and Music Academy is already planning four more scholastic chess tournaments to be held in Lathrop during 2014-2015 school year. If your child or school is interested in participating, please contact Chris Torres by visiting www.ChessAndMusic.com.

The 2014 National Elementary School Chess Championships were held the weekend of May 9th to 11th in Dallas, TX.  More than 2,200 students from 107 schools competed in these championships. 17 MSJE (Mission San Jose Elementary School, Fremont, CA) students attended these championships.  MSJE won first place in the K-3 Championship section.  The MSJE Chess team is the 2014 National Primary School Chess Champion.  MSJE tied for fifth place in the K-1 section and tied for fourth place in the K-5 section.

Gomes Elementary School, also of Fremont won the Elementary school (K -6) division.  This is the second time in two years that two of the major elementary school sections were won by schools from Fremont, CA.  Last year Gomes won K-5 and MSJE won K-6.  In K-6 Joanna Liu and Jason Zhang each had five wins and a draw in seven games and tied for six place.  Ganesh Murugappan scored 5 points and William Sartorio scored 4.5 points.  The Gomes Elementary team is now the National Elementary School Chess Champions.

In the K-3 Section MSJE was the top rated team, but several teams from New York City were close behind.  Rishith Susarla was our top rated player at 1701 and came in with the top score of 5.5 points tying for 7th place and winning a large trophy.  Second grader Kevin Pan (1534) and Annapoorni Meiyappan (1508) each scored 5 points tied for 17th place and won large trophies.  Second grader Stephen He (rated only 925) was paired against a 1337 third grader from a top New York team in the last round.  Stephen won his game to give MSJE a perfect four point round and a clear first place.   We usually do well in the last round and our motto is “MSJE owns the seventh round!”  Atul Thirumalai, Shree Jay, and Amulya Harish each scored 3.5 points in the K-3 Championship section.  The MSJE team is the 2014 Primary School Chess Champion.
