California Summer Chess Fun

July 23, 2017

To this chess coach, Summer Fun in California means exciting chess camps every week of the summer. With chess classes planned every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day, I organize events for young chess players of all skill levels, including classes with great chess teachers, rated tournaments, chess simuls against grandmasters, chess book talks with famous authors and fun blitz games against coaches. The fun continues through Labor Day leaving just enough time to prepare for my fall schedule of after school programs.
Below are some photographs from my chess fun in California thus far this summer:

World’s Top Chess Trainer to Work with Bay Area Kids

June 27, 2014

The Torres Chess and Music Academy is proud to present Susan Polgar to the Bay Area Scholastic Chess Community

Fremont, CA (PRWEB) June 27, 2014

The Torres Chess and Music Academy is inviting Northern California scholastic chess players to see firsthand why Susan Polgar was named the Top Chess Trainer in the World for 2014 by FIDE. Polgar is not only the first coach from the United States, but is also the first woman to be awarded with this honor by the international chess organization. FIDE, which was founded in 1924 in Paris, is an international organization that acts as the governing body of global chess competition and the sole provider of international chess titles. GM Susan Polgar will be visiting the critically acclaimed Fremont Summer Chess Camp as a special guest instructor, and will deliver her empowering chess lessons in person.

For more than a decade, the Torres Chess and Music Academy has been providing youth chess players in California with the very best educational opportunities. Besides being the World’s Best Chess Trainer, Susan is a former World Chess Champion and a global symbol of women’s achievement in intellectual competition. This summer, our chess teachers are of such high quality that parents will regret taking their chess kids anywhere else.” – Chris Torres

At the Fremont Summer Chess Camp, Susan will be joined by several other illustrious chess coaches, including the justifiably famous chess instructor, International Master Emory Tate. Also appearing there will be National Master, Eric Schiller. In addition to his titles, Dr. Schiller also happens to be the world’s most prolific chess author. A chess camp at Mission San Jose Elementary would be incomplete without MSJE Head Coach, Joe Lonsdale. Based on his many national championships with MSJE, Joe is widely recognized as the best scholastic chess coach west of New York City.

Whether you child is a beginner or has been playing for years, the Fremont Summer Chess Camp, a grand time will be had by all. Chris Torres, Torres Chess and Music Academy President and Editor of the California Chess Reporter, will personally see to it that all children are being well-served.

Many kids from the recent National Championship Team at Mission San Jose Elementary School were present as well as several individual Calchess State Champions. State Champion Daniel Mendelevitch ended up winning several closely contested battles in route to a first place finish in the Fremont Summer Chess Camp’s rated USCF tournament. Also very impressive were future stars Nicholas Chang, Allyson Wong, and Shree Jay.

CalChess Scholastic Chess Championship: Part Four

April 20, 2010

Tonight I attended the  Monday night chess team meeting at Mission San Jose Elementary School. Head Coach Joe Lonsdale was very pleased with the teams results at the CalChess Scholastic Chess Championship and took time at the beginning of class to congratulate all of our top finishers. Below is a list of Mission San Jose’s best individual scorers. I see many of these children several times a week and will make sure to post some of their favorite games from the CalChess State Championships.  I will soon post more complete results from the 2010 CalChess Scholastic Chess Championship.
