San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 10, 2014

A year ago, Chris Torres approached Grandmaster Susan Polgar with the idea of bringing the prestigious Susan Polgar Foundation’s National Open Championship for Girls and Boys to the Golden State. What Chris Torres never anticipated was that Susan Polgar would be so receptive to the idea that she would create the conditions necessary for the 2015 SPFNO to be a qualifying event for the Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls and the FIDE World Youth Chess Championship 2015 in Porto Carras, Greece. With the addition of so many qualifying opportunities to the already enormous prize fund, the 2015 Susan Polgar National Open Championship for Girls and Boys will be the most historically significant scholastic chess tournament ever held in California.

A tournament with the size and scope of the 2015 Susan Polgar National Open Championship for Girls and Boys is unprecedented for California and requires a state of the art venue that is conveniently located, spacious and offers all of the comforts that world class chess players require to perform at their best. To fit the needs of this project, Chris Torres selected the 105,000 square foot exhibit hall at the San Mateo Event Center which is located in the heart of Silicon Valley between San Francisco International Airport and Google Headquarters. Located a few minutes away from the tournament site, the Sofitel San Francisco Bay will offer chess families the beautifully appointed accommodations of a French luxury hotel at a “chess rate” that is unbelievably affordable. In addition to the main event, young chess players of any skill level will also be invited to participate in a simultaneous chess exhibition against Grandmaster Susan Polgar, a blitz chess championship, a puzzle solving competition, a special breakfast with Susan Polgar and numerous other fun activities. With scores of tourist attractions located a short drive away from the tournament; Chris Torres believes that the 2015 SPFNO is an ideal opportunity for a memorable family chess vacation.

“For nearly two decades, I have been providing youth chess players in California with fantastic tournament experiences. Besides being the World’s Best Chess Trainer, Susan Polgar is a former World Chess Champion and a global symbol of women’s achievement in intellectual competition. Susan and I are confident that the 2015 Susan Polgar National Open Championship for Girls and Boys will a great tournament and, for many, the chess experience of a lifetime! ” – Chris Torres

Children Were Checkmating Breast Cancer at a Chess Tournament in Northern, California

Everybody was a winner at the Breast Cancer Research Chess Tournament in Fremont.

Fremont, California (PRWEB) May 06, 2014

On Saturday May 3, 2014, scores of children attended the Annual Breast Cancer Research Tournament held by the Torres Chess and Music Academy. In addition to the standard trophies and medals that are ubiquitous at scholastic chess tournaments, all attendees were treated to fun activities by Steve and Kate’s Camp who was the corporate sponsor for this event.

“Having Steve and Kate’s Camp at the event helped to create the chess festival atmosphere that Torres Chess and Music Academy Tournaments are known for. In addition, their sponsorship made it possible to raise money for breast cancer research while improving the overall presentation of the tournament.” -Chris Torres

In addition to Steve and Kate’s Camp counselors, there were plenty of TCAMA chess coaches on hand to help the children use this tournament as a means toward improving their chess. In particular, James Paquette was especially busy analyzing chess games and teaching notation to the younger chess players. Chris Torres described his Director of Instruction by stating that, “James Paquette is a natural educator whose love for the game of chess captures the imagination of nearly every child he instructs.”

The site for the Breast Cancer Research tournament was the campus of Mission San Jose Elementary School in Fremont, California. MSJE is the home of the 2013 National Elementary Chess Champions as well as the host school for the famous Fremont Summer Chess Camp. Students from MSJE didn’t let their national titles dissuade them from attending a local chess tournament that raised money for a great cause. Many MSJE students were in attendance proudly wearing the “Blue Team Shirts” which list the titles from a State Championship Dynasty that spans several decades.

Help Send Ben Rood to Slovenia

October 17, 2012

To the Supporters of Northern California Chess,

On November 2, 2012 California chess super-star Ben Rood will leave for Maribor, Slovenia in order to compete in the FIDE World Youth Chess Championships. Ben Rood asked his family to attend for support as he battles the best eight-year-olds from around the globe. A family trip to Slovenia is an expensive undertaking and I am asking California chess players to help him out. Please come and participate in the Send Ben Rood to Slovenia  scholastic chess tournament or give a small donation to the cause. The Torres Chess and Music Academy is donating all the awards for the tournament  and all money raised will go directly to Ben Rood’s family to offset costs associated with Ben participating in the 2012 World Youth Chess Championships.  Together we can make chess in Northern California better for everyone.

Sincerely,

Chris Torres
