July 13, 2014

International Master Emory Tate stunned the Bay Area’s best young chess players by achieving a perfect score in a massive simultaneous chess exhibition at the Torres Chess and Music Academy’s Fremont Summer Chess Camp.

Fremont, California (PRWEB) July 13, 2014

For all those unaware of what a great chess player International Master Emory Tate truly is, the Torres Chess and Music Academy recommends playing through his recent win over Grandmaster Maurice Ashley in just 22 moves! For the children who participated in his simultaneous exhibition chess event on July 10th, Emory has achieved a legendary status.

Nearly 50 opponents, many of whom are some of the top ranked young chess players in the United States, took on the famed International Chess Master simultaneously. Emory Tate, who only had the white pieces in a few of the games, played for 5 hours and a walked nearly 2 miles while completing his simultaneous chess exhibition! During the course of this momentous task, Emory Tate emerged victorious on every single board.

“In sixteen years of running events like these, I have never witnessed this level of chess mastery in one of our simuls. Beyond making it look easy, Emory managed to make every child feel important.” -Chris Torres

The gentleman behind organizing this event was the very famous chess instructor Chris Torres. Mr. Torres is the founder of the Torres Chess and Music Academy which is very popular with the top scholastic chess players in Northern California. Every child who took part in the main event received one-on-one instruction following their game, an autograph from Emory Tate, a souvenir photograph of Emory at their board and the opportunity to learn from one of the strongest chess masters in the United States.

The Fremont Summer Chess Camp has two more weeks of classes and special events including a lecture from famed chess author Eric Schiller and a visit from Grandmaster Susan Polgar. For more information please visithttp://www.ChessAndMusic.com.

Children’s Chess in the Bay Area

June 22, 2010

A Parent’s Guide to Chess in the San Francisco Bay Area:

Bay Area chess parents have many resources available to help establish their children’s chess calendar. Two of my  favorite Northern California chess websites are listed below.

1) SiliconValleyChess.com

This is the web site to visit to get all the latest information on children’s chess events in Norther California. SiliconValleyChess.com features an easy to use Bay Area scholastic chess calendar that offers links to the top children’s chess events in the Silicon Valley Area. Rated tournaments listed on SiliconValleyChess.com are a part of a yearly scholastic chess grand prix which awards special prizes to the Bay Area’s top young chess players.  A regularly updated scholastic chess leader board allows all competing children to view their position in relation to the other young chess players in Northern California.

2) FremontChess.com

The best website to find out information on scholastic chess in Fremont, California. FremontChess.com enables parents to easily find chess coaches teaching in Fremont. This website also features stories on the top scholastic chess players in Fremont including Fremont’s National Champion Elementary Chess Teams. Also, included on FremontChess.com is a calendar which depicts many of the best scholastic chess opportunities in Fremont, California.

Upcoming Chess Events

April 22, 2009

Dear Chess Parents,

The next two weekends contain many exciting scholastic chess events that your children will benefit from attending.

On Saturday April 25th, I will be hosting a chess tournament at Mission San Jose Elementary School, a TCAMA school in Fremont which just won the National Chess Championship in the K-6 division. This tournament will allow your children to practice for the upcoming state championships as well as compete and interact with the National Scholastic Champions. There will be a raffle at this tournament with the chance to win chess books and free lessons with TCAMA instructors.

Apply online by going to: http://fremontchess.com/onlineregistration/view?id=1

On Sunday April 26th, I will be holding a special four hour intensive chess camp in Palo Alto for TCAMA students planning on attending the State Championships. This $40 class is designed to help ensure your child is ready for the intense level of competition met with during the state championships.

Apply Online by going to: http://chessandmusic.com/applications/view?id=1

Finally, May first through third your child can compete in the Calchess State Championships. I consider this event to be the Super Bowl of Chess and recommend that all of our students attend. This is a great time to show school spirit and try for a team award as well as an individual achievement.

Apply by going to: http://www.calchessscholastics.org/

I hope to see you at these events.

Sincerely,

Chris Torres

Dear Chess Coach,

The Fall Chess Classic is coming up on October 25th at Sunset Elementary School. I sincerely hope that your team is able to attend to help us continue a fine Bakersfield tradition.
This year I have introduced some changes to the structure and rules of the chess tournaments in order to bring us up to the same standards that are being used at USCF National Events. One change I have made is in regards to sections and team trophies. This year teams will be competing for team trophies in two sections per age group rather than one cumulative age group score. I believe that a cumulative score for a team across several sections imposes a penalty on teams that have players in the highest section. This does not serve the chess community well and will have the effect of discouraging strong players.  I have also increased the rating floor in several sections to bring our section levels closer to what tournament directors in other areas use. I believe this will give all chess players a better chance at competitive games and also cause an overall increase in the ratings of our scholastic chess players. A third change I have made is making it mandatory that all chess players in the seventh grade or above record their games. Hopefully, we can bring this requirement down to 4th grade in the near future. I have made this change because:

1) I do not believe we should be holding our children to a lower standard than what is required for children outside of Kern County.

2) This will greatly increase the probability that tournament directors are making correct judgements on the chess boards.

3) I hope to bring a USCF National Championship Event to Bakersfield in the near future.

In order to bring a National Championship tournament to Bakersfield we would need a large tournament staff,  start-up capital, experienced tournament directors, a strong relationship with theUSCF, and a large student population. I believe my organization has all of this. Players from all over California would have the much deserved “home field advantage” against the tournament field of about 2,500 participants. In order for this dream to become a reality we need to continue hosting tournaments of the same size and increase the prestige of our tournaments by adhering to the high standards set in other regions. Please help to make this happen by having your players attend as many of our tournaments as possible this year.

Sincerely,
Chris Torres
