2nd Annual Susan Polgar Foundation’s North American All Girls Championship

November 5, 2017

This weekend I had the pleasure of attending the 2nd Annual Susan Polgar Foundation’s North American All Girls Championship held by Bay Area Chess at the beautiful Biltmore Hotel in Santa Clara, California. As always, Grandmaster Susan Polgar was very personable with all the girls in attendance. The huge efforts by Chief TD Martha Underwood and organizer Judit Sztaray made this tournament a delight to attend. Hopefully this tradition will continue in the Bay Area. It is wonderful to see so many girls (including my own) playing in a such a unique chess tournament.

The 2014 Champion Girls from the Mission San Jose Elementary School Chess Team.

On February first, girls from all over Northern California headed to Saint Marks School in San Rafael for the annual Calchess Girls’ Championship. The talented few who finished in first place were awarded the title of Calchess State Girls Champion and given fabulous trophies to commemorate their achievement. Once again, girls from Fremont, California dominated the tournament.

The reigning National Champion chess team at Mission San Jose Elementary School sent a few very talented chess players to compete in the event. MSJE first grader Allyson Wong ran away with the State Championship title in the k-1 section. Allyson’s friend, Shree Jay, also from Mission San Jose Elementary School, placed first in the section for second and third graders. Not to be outdone by her younger team mates, Kavya Sasikumar became the California State Champion for grades 4-6. In addition to the newly crowned state champions, Mission San Jose Elementary School also had third-grader Annapoorni Meiyappan place second in the difficult Junior High section. The outstanding performance of these fantastic young chess players is the result of hours of hard work by the girls and a strong commitment to chess by their parents.

Mission San Jose Elementary School is run under the auspices of the Torres Chess and Music Academy. For more information on the Torres Chess and Music Academy’s programs in Fremont, please visit www.FremontChess.com
